Some of the best things we carry into adulthood come from a family kitchen or a favorite classroom. Today, Emily Shiffer cracks open the original Crock-Pot cookbook, and we meet a teacher whose anatomy lesson is unlikely to fade from her students’ memories. We’re also looking at the conversational habits that help people connect, for those of us whose opening move is still “So… been busy?”

From roasts to ham and scalloped potatoes, these ’70s recipes will fill you up.

Slow cooker season officially arrives as temperatures drop. It’s the signal for Americans to dig out their beloved Crock-Pots.

The branded slow cooker debuted in 1971 at the National Housewares Show in Chicago. Previous versions of the modern-day model have been in use since the 19th century, according to Smithsonian Magazine. But an inventor named Irving (Nachumsohn) Naxon patented his slow cooker in 1940. He called it the Naxon Beanery.

When he retired, he sold his company, Naxon Utilities, to Rival Manufacturing in Kansas City. Rival then hard-launched its Rival Crock-Pot in 1971.

The Crock-Pot craze took off, and Rival released a Crock-Pot cookbook for users to enjoy. Below are eight original recipes that became American classics and are still appreciated today.

A $100 million commitment aims to close the gap.

By Harmony Hobbs

Frankie Robertson had spent years helping families navigate premature birth. But nothing could have prepared her for sitting in a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with her own newborn daughter.

But experiencing it herself was entirely different, revealing a gap often overlooked in conversations about pregnancy and childbirth: Mothers need care and support long after their babies arrive.

That’s one way to keep students engaged!

By Eric Pfeiffer

Being an educator in the American public school system is one of the hardest jobs in our nation. Not only is the work itself challenging, but with constant battles for educational funding and a student body increasingly tethered to their electronic devices, most teachers in America and around the world are navigating uncharted territory when it comes to finding ways to keep their students engaged in their studies.

And that’s why when Verónica Duque came across a form-fitting, anatomical bodysuit while doing some online shopping, she thought it would be perfect visual aid to convey vital information (pun intended) to her students in Spain, in a way they’d actually remember.

Turns out, the entire internet would remember it too.

Duque’s husband tweeted a collage of images from the classroom lesson, which quickly went viral, with nearly 70,000 likes. Loosely translated, the tweet from her husband Michael reads: “Very proud of this volcano of ideas that I am lucky to have as a wife. Today she explained the human body to her students in a very original way. Great Veronica !!!”
